Motion Synthesis

Introduction

This assignment aims to research the dimensions of a standard ISO shipping container, design a door and a mechanism that would move it between the two positions shown, without traversing the body the container.

Here, the models for a door and the container is given. Its container has a dimension of 8.5 ft x 8.5ft x 20ft.

1. 2D linkage mechanism in Math Illustration

Firstly, 2D linkage mechanism model was constructed in Math Illustration. Firstly the top view picture of the container with the door on was pasted onto the software and its transparency was set at 80%. Then initial, intermediate, and final desired position of the door was indicated. By drawing the corresponding bisectors, the length and coordinates of the linkages were determined.

The video shows the final 2D linkage mechanism. In the next step, this geometry was created in SolidWorks.

2. SolidWorks Motion Analysis

A container model with the previously determined link lengths and positions was made. A rotary motor was applied to one of the link and the resultant motion analysis is shown below.

In this way, a mechanism that would move the door between the two positions without traversing the body of the container was successfully developed.
